Cal’s Hints and Tips

Insurance Busting Tips...

Like every other biker in the UK I know how expensive insurance can be. That is why CIA and I have decided to give you a run down on how to lower your premium.

First up, fit an alarm or an immobilizer. You could really push the boat out and fit both as these are two basic precautions that insurers look for straight off.

If you have a garage at home then make sure your pride and joy is tucked up in there. Another option is to hire a lock up if you don’t have a garage at home. A garage offers a lot more protection from thieves as it keeps your bike out of sight.

You can increase your excess on a policy which will bring your premium down but just remember you will have that little more to pay should you have a prang.

A lot of manufacturers provide their own insurance at very competitive rates so that is definitely worth a look.

If you are a fair weather rider or a Sunday afternoon merchant, then it is worth putting a mileage limit on your package. If you are planning a trip round the world then perhaps this isn’t the option for you!

Get advanced…..advanced training that is. The IAM run courses which improve riding skills and in return lower your insurance. Winter riding is not everyone’s cup of tea, if you don’t intend to use your bike in the winter months then reduce your cover.

Using your bike for work can be great if you need to get through a lot of traffic but if you can avoid commuting then you can save some cash. Stick to social, domestic and pleasure.

This will sound very antisocial, but if you can avoid it don’t have a pillion passenger. Tell them to get on their bike!

Keeping your bike standard also helps reduce your insurance.

Many bikers have more than one machine – it really is an addiction! Your best option there is to put them all on one multi-bike policy.

Points on your license are not a good thing, so do your best to stay claim and conviction free.

If you are seen as a responsible adult it will also help. Being married and being a home owner are two great ways to keep your prices down. Best start proposing!
